Michael Werman

Mayoral Candidate

Give us a brief account of yourself and your qualifications to hold office.

I grew up on a farm in northeastern North Dakota. At 18, I joined the Army National Guard as a heavy equipment operator. While in the National Guard I attended North Dakota State College of Science, earning an associate degree in civil engineering and land surveying. For the past 20 years, I’ve lived in Rockford with my wife, Kellie. We have two children, Sydney (17) and Trevor (14), who attend Rockford High School.

My commitment to our community is evident through my years of coaching youth sports and my 14-year tenure on the Rockford Planning and Zoning Commission, where I served as lead chair for six years. For the last three years, I’ve been a member of the City Council, also serving as Deputy Mayor. Working closely with the current Mayor has provided me with valuable insights into the responsibilities of the role. I am confident that my experience, judgment, and drive will enable me to serve our great community effectively.

Why have you chosen to run for office?

I am running for Mayor because Rockford needs a leader who can guide us into the future and foster growth. I envision Rockford as a vibrant place where people want to live, dine, socialize, raise families, and run businesses. I believe my experience and dedication can make this vision a reality.

What do you feel are the chief issues that will face our residents during your term in office?

One of the primary issues we will face is housing. Rockford has limited areas for new construction, and we must identify new locations for future subdivisions.

What are your goals if you are elected?

As Mayor, my goals include maintaining a balanced budget, ensuring Rockford remains a business-friendly community, and making development in Rockford attractive and straightforward for developers. Additionally, I prioritize maintaining our excellent parks and potentially adding a pickleball court.

What, if anything, would you change if elected?

Rockford is a great community, and one thing I would change if elected is to update our city’s website to make it more informative and user-friendly. It is important for the residents to be able to easily navigate through the website to find relevant information.

What, if any, email should we use for community members to reach out to you with questions?
