Heather Michalik

City Council Candidate

Give us a brief account of yourself and your qualifications to hold office.

I have been a resident of Rockford for 19 years and have actively engaged with the community through volunteering for local organizations. My diverse experiences allow me to think outside the box and approach challenges from multiple perspectives. I prioritize listening to our community’s concerns, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard. These qualities, along with my commitment to service, make me well-qualified to hold office and effectively represent our community.

Why have you chosen to run for office?

I am running for city council again because I have truly enjoyed my two years of experience in this role. During my time on the council, I have gained valuable insights and a deeper understanding of our community’s needs. I am passionate about being a strong voice for our residents at city hall and continuing to advocate for the issues that matter most to our community.

What do you feel are the chief issues that will face our residents during your term in office?

I believe the chief issues our residents will face during my term are the rising costs of taxes driven by inflation. These increases impact our ability to maintain essential services and invest in necessary equipment and improvements for our city. Addressing these financial challenges will be crucial to ensuring we can continue to provide quality services while being mindful of the burden on our residents.

What are your goals if you are elected?

If elected, my goals include enhancing traffic and pedestrian safety to ensure a secure environment for all residents. I also aim to support local businesses in their growth and encourage the establishment of new small businesses in Rockford. Additionally, I am committed to preserving and promoting the charm of our community, making Rockford an inviting place for residents of all ages to call home.

What, if anything, would you change if elected?

If elected, I would focus on enhancing transparency within our city government. This includes collaborating with city staff to improve access to information for residents through a user-friendly website, engaging social media posts, and informative newsletters. By making city information more accessible, we can foster greater community involvement and trust.

This is our town; this is our future. I appreciate your consideration as a candidate for city council.

What, if any, email should we use for community members to reach out to you with questions?
